Hello,

I am looking for your brief input, advice and any suggestions as appropriate which may be of assistance as I consider future opportunities in health care IT.

Brief background:
My background has been project managing cross functional teams / deliverables through all stages of the software (product) development life cycle to deployment for internal / external users.

I am presently working on a Masters IT specializing in Health Information Management, and I am about to begin my courses focusing in the HIM area (e.g., health informatics, databases, system security, data analysis and others). I recently completed a Health Terminology / Anatomy course through Liberty Hospital, and I will be completing a course on medical office automation. My interest in the direction is strong and committed.

My goal, given the background, Masters work, and future interest in health care, is to work in a project management role on software / systems for an employer using or producing software / systems in the health care industry.

I have explored volunteering for local hospitals, but the Volunteer Departments (Mgrs) usually do not have activities / roles that provide very much exposure to working with hospital software, systems or operations that would be of benefit to my future direction.

Looking for? brief advice, input or other suggestions for:
- transitioning to health care IT / information management
- key health topical areas I could focus knowledge on - without doing an associate's degree
- possible opportunities (full / part time / volunteer) with employer in health care space that
might offer exposure for interests as described (health care IT, software/systems,
project management activities)
- connections for discussing and advice on the path
- - -
I will follow up on any post or connect with you offline through email as appropriate.

Thank you.
David

Any input on making the transition from health care marketing/communications (been doing it for approximately 15 years) to administrator? I'm getting an MHA, but would like to go ahead and make the move ...

Hello all, I work for the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City and would like to share this community action event that we are sponsoring with you. Hopefully, you can make it!

Living on the Edge
What would happen if a car accident or a lay-off left you with a job and resources? Could you survive a month in poverty? We invite you to walk a mile in the shoes of those facing poverty by participating in Living on the Edge, a community action poverty simulation presented by the Missouri Association for Community Action. This simulation will dramatically demonstrate how much time and energy many families have to give just to survive day-by-day in poverty. The hour simulation will be followed by a facilitated discussion about public-policy initiatives and what our communities can do to address poverty and improve the health of our residents. This FREE simulation will be Thursday, November 6th from 9-11:30 a.m. at Penn Valley Campus Center, Room #503 (3201 SW Trafficway, Kansas City, MO). To register, visit www.healthcare4kc.org

So I am still trying to get my head wrapped around our presedential candidates plans (or even just a substantial independent thought) surrounding health care reform...talk about an exercise in futility!

Anyway - I ran into one of the fact checker sites that was quick and easy to glance at regarding the candidates soundbites on this topic - thought I'd share with my partners in KC Healthcare!
