Networking Tools - Even Facebook is great.

This is kind of an aside to a previous article, but one I want to share regardless of the outcome.

I have a Facebook account - yes, I am a grown man but realize the value of this tool. Primarily my wife and I use it to communicate with distant family and some close friends, but on occassion someone from the past will show up claiming friendship.

Last week a friend of mine from High School sent such a claim - it was a good claim, so I accepted his friendship. A few days later we had lunch to catch up, ending up in "shop-talk" and the realization that he and I both have very common interests that could help each other.

Within just a few hours our discussion turned into a request to meet with his VP, not necessarily for a position, but to find out if I am someone that can help them with several areas of the business. I met with the VP and CEO two days ago and had, what I believe, is an excellent two-hour conversation about how we can help each other.

I am following up today with the VP to see where things may lead.

The point I am driving at here is - regardless of how unusual or juvenile something may seem, there is never a reason to overlook a way to touch someone. Whether it be a sign on your car, a flashing sign with your mug and name on it, or Facebook, it is always worth it to make yourself visible where possible. Be responsible, but make yourself known. You never know what an email or friend claim can turn into.

Just for the record, there are multiple community sites to become part of - I prefer Facebook and LinkedIn outside of KCOC for many reasons, but make certain you check them out and use them to your advantage. Don't be afraid to make it tool for showing your warez.
