Lansing, KS
Where do you work and what do you do
I am currently looking for a job. I am a marketing and public relations specialist, with 10 years experience. I specialize in writing, graphic design, special events planning and media relations. I am looking for a position where I can use my creative talents to promote an organization's mission, services or products.
Tell us about yourself
I was born and raised in Minneapolis, MN. I moved to this area in 1996, with stops in between in LaCrosse, WI, Pullman, WA, Kirksville, MO and Emporia, KS. I loved the Pacific Northwest, and maybe someday I will move back there, but I am a Midwesterner heart and soul.

I am active in the Leavenworth-Lansing Chamber of Commerce, Leavenworth Main Street Program and the Leavenworth County Development Corporation. The Leavenworth/Lansing area is a great place to raise a family. We enjoy the benefits of a small town with the all the big city attractions a short distance away. ("Oh, Auntie Em, there is no place like home!") If you haven't visited in awhile, I would encourage you to come. We have a historical driving tour, Ft. Leavenworth and other sites, unique specialty shops downtown and some great restaurants I can recommend.

I love cats and currently have three of them. I grew up with dogs and like them as well, but cats are the ideal pets for busy people.

10 Simple and Inexpensive Marketing Ideas for a Tough Economy

The harsh reality of today's economy is that many people are unable or unwilling to spend money like they have in the past. It used to mean nothing to me to spend $100 or $200 on clothes and shoes every few months, go out to eat several time a week and buy things I didn't really need but thought I wanted on a weekly basis. I also used to donate money to several local charities. During the past year and a half, I have probably spent only $300 total on these items. Not good for the local economy,… Continue

The Importance of Being Earnest

One of my favorite writers, Oscar Wilde, wrote a play called “The Importance of Being Earnest”, about two men who each pretend to be someone they are not to impress two young women they fall in love with. Jack, the main character, tells his friend, Algernon, that he is “Jack in the country and Earnest in town.” The story takes twists and turns and cleverly uses words to uncover each character’s deceptions.

Now, I am sure you are wondering what this has to do with marketing or business. The answ… Continue

What is Marketing?

According to the American Marketing Association, “marketing is an organizational function and a set of processes for creating, communicating, and delivering value to customers and for managing customer relationships in ways that benefit the organization and its stakeholders.” Just what does this mean?

The answer seems simple: marketing is just about anything that draws customers to your business and keeps them coming back. Yet this is not so simple to accomplish. One thing to keep in mind is th… Continue

Jobless but not humorless

Having been unemployed for almost a year, I don't know what I am supposed to do that I haven't already done. I have been: researching companies, networking, volunteering, freelancing, following-up, keeping up-to-date on current trends, attending seminars, reinventing and reevaluating my skills, etc.... The fact is, there are too many talented, experienced people looking for too few jobs. Finding humor in the things is what is keeping me sane. I would like to share today's humorous tidbit: I rece… Continue

Hi, Cindy. You pose an excellent question. Today's economic times are sure interesting and, you are correct, there are many self-employed marketing folks out there. However, I personally believe that when the (perceived) economy turns around, employers will still be hesitant to hire folks full-time. It's my belief that outsourcing and small businesses will be the way of the future. In any case, no matter the amount of 'solopreneurs' in town, there's always enough work to go around. Best of luck!
