As children we constantly asked the question why? We asked why the sky was blue, why fish couldn’t breathe air, why the moon changed shape. We were challenging our surrounding and demanding answers. It was our way of making sense of our world.
As we grew older many of our questions got answered and along the way our sense of wonder diminished. As life continued, all around us we started hearing about limits. The word “no” was introduced to us early on. No you can’t eat ice cream for breakfast, no you can’t stay out all night, no your idea won’t work.
Naturally, over time, we stopped asking questions. We stopped pushing the boundaries. We learned to live in a limited world, a world in which there’s never enough of anything. Not enough food, not enough money, not enough healthcare…the list is endless. Why?
So who is it that controls all of this and places limits on everything? Most of us are grown-ups so our parents aren’t the ones now giving us limits. If it’s not them then just who is it? Who is it in our lives that tell us we can’t?
You might be surprised to learn that the very person who is limiting you is the one who used to spend hours looking at bugs and wondering why they were so small and had so many legs. That person is you. We all limit ourselves for various reasons.
Some of us have allowed ourselves to be limited by our surroundings. No one wants to stand out, or shake the status quo after all. So over the years we’ve gone with the flow and went along with our peers and when told we couldn’t do something we didn’t. Rare is the person who bucks the system and goes ahead when told he can’t and does it anyway. Usually when a person does there are huge rewards awaiting.
Thomas Edison was such a person. He was told time and time again that he couldn’t make light from electricity. Yet after over a hundred attempts at perfecting a filament that would both illuminate and last long enough to be useful, he invented the light bulb. Had he gone along with his pundits we might still be lighting our homes with kerosene lamps to this day.
So what are you allowing to limit you? Not enough of something? Too much of something? Maybe it’s your family, your boss, or perhaps the people around you who tell you you can’t. No matter what the source, you are ultimately in control. You determine whether or not you allow yourself to be limited. You and only you decide what your limits are if any. You are responsible for the outcome.
Do you have a great idea that will change the world? What’s stopping you? Have you invented something that you know will sell like hot cakes? Who’s stopping you? Do you have a plan that will make your department more efficient? What’s keeping you from presenting it to management? Did someone say you couldn’t?
Think back to your childhood. Remember how you never let anything stand in your way once you decided you were going to do it. Even if you had to go against your parents wishes and suffer the consequences. Once you committed you knew no obstacles. If you did encounter one you found a way around it. Maybe it’s time to call on that long forgotten quality once again.
There’s an old saying that the sky’s the limit. Maybe its time we all asked the question why? Why be limited to the sky? Isn’t there a whole vast universe beyond?
